Scira Offshore Energy
Scira Offshore Energy is a joint venture company owned by Equinor, Green Investment Group and Equitix.
Scira is creating a major new source of sustainable energy – the Sheringham Shoal 317MW offshore wind farm. Comprising 88 wind turbines and generating around 1.1TWh of green energy per annum, the wind farm will produce enough electricity to power 220,000 homes.
The wind farm is located between 17 and 23 kilometres off the coast of north Norfolk. Its onshore bases are its harbour facilities at Wells, its administration base at Egmere and a substation at Cawston.

Scira needed a robust, high-reliability, highly connected network in an area of Norfolk that had very limited connectivity and bandwidth.
The network was required to carry critical offshore VHF/UHF communications traffic, CCTV signals, telecoms, weather and energy data, in addition to providing desktop services to some 70 users.
The required network would link offshore substations with the marine base, the admin centre, remote data centres and energy traders in London. In effect, the requirement was to provide a network to manage the entire system and provide production data to the energy market in London.
We had a very short time frame of five months with a fixed end date to complete the project, including managing BT to install many kilometres of fibre across North Norfolk and deploy their IP Clear product on schedule.
In that time, we designed and installed a fully managed resilient wide area network with dual connectivity using Cisco routers. This is used to facilitate a private cloud environment with corporate WI-FI network allowing access to the plant control systems which receives data from the wind farm. We used our own staff throughout to ensure delivery.
We also carried out numerous desktop installations featuring an enterprise class software suite comprising Microsoft applications including Microsoft Office, Lync, Sharepoint and Exchange with our own antispam, antivirus and managed firewalls. The private cloud is hosted on virtualised servers within our high-availability cluster located in our dual Norwich data centres for security.
We are now managing all IT functions reporting directly to Scira’s General Manager.
